PPIA & IA

About

IRS Installment Agreements (IA) & Partial Payment Plans (PPIA) If you can’t pay your full tax debt upfront, the IRS offers payment options that allow you to resolve your balance over time. Two of the most common solutions are Installment Agreements (IA) and Partial Payment Installment Agreements (PPIA). At Inland Empire Tax Relief, we help clients across California set up the right payment plan based on their financial situation, while minimizing IRS pressure and avoiding aggressive collections. ⸻ What Is an Installment Agreement (IA)? An Installment Agreement allows you to pay your tax debt in monthly payments instead of a lump sum. This is ideal if: • You have steady income • You can afford monthly payments • You want to avoid enforcement actions like liens or levies Once approved, the IRS will typically stop collection activity as long as you stay current with your payments and future taxes. ⸻ What Is a Partial Payment Installment Agreement (PPIA)? A Partial Payment Installment Agreement (PPIA) is a more flexible option for those who cannot afford to pay their full tax debt over time. Instead of paying the full balance, you: • Make lower monthly payments based on what you can afford • Pay toward the debt for a limited period • May not pay the full balance before the IRS collection period expires This means you could settle your tax debt for less over time, without a lump-sum offer. ⸻ Key Differences Between IA and PPIA • IA (Installment Agreement): Full balance is paid over time • PPIA: Only a portion may be paid before the statute expires • IA: Higher monthly payments • PPIA: Lower, income-based payments • PPIA requires detailed financial review by the IRS ⸻ Who Qualifies? You may qualify for IA or PPIA if: • You owe back taxes to the IRS • You cannot pay in full immediately • You have consistent income (for IA) or limited disposable income (for PPIA) • You are tax compliant (all returns filed)
